Wayne Au, a former public high school social studies and language arts teacher, is an Assistant Professor in the Education Program at the University of Washington, Bothell Campus. He is editor of Rethinking Multicultural Education: Teaching for Racial and Cultural Justice, co-editor of Rethinking Our Classrooms Volume 1 (Revised and Expanded Edition), and writes regularly for Rethinking Schools. Wayne is also author and editor of many academic articles and books, and his most recent book, Critical Curriculum Studies: Curriculum, Consciousness, and the Politics of Knowing, was published by Routledge in 2011.

Linda Christensen is Director of the Oregon Writing Project at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. During her thirty year career in Portland Public Schools, she taught language arts at Jefferson and Grant High Schools and worked as Portland’s Language Arts Coordinator. Linda Christensen authored and edited several Rethinking Schools books, including The New Teacher Book, Teaching for Joy and Justice, Reading, Writing, and Rising Up, and Rethinking School Reform.

Kelley Dawson
Kelley Dawson Salas teaches third grade at the Milwaukee Spanish Immersion School in Milwaukee. Kelley co-edited The New Teacher Book.

Stan Karp taught English and Journalism to high school students in Paterson, New Jersey for 30 years. He is currently Director of the Secondary Reform Project for New Jersey’s Education Law Center. Stan co-edited Rethinking School Reform and Rethinking Our Classrooms, Vol 1 and 2.

David Levine, whose research interests include urban education and American Educational history, teaches social foundations courses in the education department of Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio.

Larry Miller taught for over 18 years in Milwaukee Public Schools. He is now an elected school board member for Milwaukee Public Schools and is an adjunct for Marquette College of Education and National Louis University.

Bob Peterson taught fifth grade for over 20 years. He was recently elected president of the Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association, and is a founding editor of Rethinking Schools. Bob co-edited Rethinking Mathematics, Rethinking Columbus, Keeping the Promise, and Rethinking Globalization.

Melissa Bollow Tempel
Melissa Bollow Tempel teaches bilingual 1st grade at La Escuela Fratney in Milwaukee. She is the mother of two girls and an active member of the Educator’s Network for Social Justice.

Stephanie Walters most recently served as an organizing consultant for the Wisconsin Education Association Council. She is a co-editor of The New Teacher Book and Keeping the Promise.

Terry Burant –
Terry teaches in the College of Education at the University of Wyoming.

Helen Gym –
Gym is a parent and community activist in Philadelphia, PA, where she serves on the leadership board of the Philadelphia Public School Notebook, an education newspaper, and as a board member of Asian Americans United.

Rita Tenorio has taught at the elementary level for over 30 years. She is currently the principal at La Escuela Fratney in Milwaukee.

Dyan Watson –
Watson, a former social studies high school teacher, is an Assistant Professor of Education at Lewis and Clark Graduate School of Education in Portland, Oregon.

Kathy Williams
Kathy Williams was an elementary classroom teacher for over 20 years, before serving on an administrative level in Milwaukee Public Schools. She recently retired as the Director of the Division of Teaching and Learning for Milwaukee Public Schools.

Kathy M. Xiong is a nationally board-certified special education teacher in Milwaukee, WI.  She is involved in Educators’ Network for Social Justice and the national network of Teacher Activist Groups. 

Editorial Staff

Curriculum Editor

Bill Bigelow is curriculum editor of Rethinking Schools magazine and author or co-editor of several Rethinking Schools books: A People’s History for the Classroom, The Line Between Us: Teaching About the Border and Mexican Immigration, Rethinking Columbus, Rethinking Globalization: Teaching for Justice in an Unjust World, and Rethinking Our Classrooms–Volumes 1 and 2. Bigelow lives in Portland, Oregon, and has taught high school social studies since 1978.

Policy and Production Editor

Jody Sokolower is the Policy and Production Editor at Rethinking Schools. A long-time anti-imperialist activist, Jody has taught middle school, high school and adult learners in the San Francisco Bay Area, including six years at Berkeley High. As a writer/editor, she has worked at the University of California-Berkeley AIDS Health Project, Golden Gate University and Washington University in St. Louis.

Rachel Kenison
Marketing Director
Rachel Kenison is the Director of Marketing and Outreach for Rethinking Schools. She has spent over fifteen years working in the educational publishing industry bringing additional knowledge from her experiences as a teacher. She is passionate about supporting small, local farms and the businesses that support them.

Tegan Dowling
Office Manager

Tegan Dowling is the Office Manager for Rethinking Schools. She “thinks globally and acts locally” by supporting Milwaukee-based small businesses and non-profits with technology development.

Business Manager

Michael Trokan is the Business Manager for Rethinking Schools. He has an extensive background in community organizing around peace and social justice issues, including the United Farmworkers of America, Milwaukee Justice and Peace Center, Milwaukee Mobilization for Survival, (now Peace Action-Wisconsin,) and Casa Maria Catholic Worker Community. He has been on staff since 1990.
